That’s it. That’s the news. Apple has announced the replacement of the 13″ MacBook Pro with butterfly Magic keyboard with a 13″ MacBook Pro with scissors key Magic keyboard. But there’s a little more to it than that. Here we go!
The keyboard
We have to mention the keyboard, right? A small number of people out of all the people that purchased butterfly keyboard Macs had keys that stopped working, primarily due to dust. This sucked, because you can’t enjoy your couple-thousand-dollar computer when yur wrds cme ut lik this (non-functioning o and e keys, in this example).
Beyond that, there were people that never adjusted to the flat, low travel of the keys.
But all that’s over now, the new 2020 13″ MBP keyboard uses a scissors mechanism, which is what had been used for 2015 and prior.
Also, it’s important to mention, you get a physical Esc key, something people had said they’d had trouble getting used to using the TouchBar touchscreen escape key.
The computer itself
- 10th-generation processors for up to 80 percent faster graphics performance (integrated Intel GPU)
- Double the storage size (standard storage starting at 256GB all the way up to 1TB, with an option to customize for 4TB)
- The ability to connect to 6K displays, like the Apple Pro Display XDR 16GB or 32GB of RAM. (Note, if you want to connect to that Pro Display, you need to buy the highest configurations.)
And of course, Apple’s security T2 chip that allows you to have TouchID and ApplePay built into the TouchBar.
Should you upgrade?
I have a few questions for you.
- How old is your current computer? I’m typing this on one from 2014.
- Is something broken on your computer that leads you to replacing it? My battery is shot, my keyboard doesn’t recognize a few keys unless I press very hard on them, and my GPU occasionally causes my screen to display garbage data.
Basically, if you need a good computer, and don’t require the 15″ screen, this could be a very good option. If repairing your old computer is expensive, or it’s just very old and not sufficient for your needs, maybe now is your time.
The base and middle priced MacBook Pro are sold with 2 USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, and the top model comes with 4 USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports.
The important thing to note is, that top model is the one that can connect to the Apple Pro Display XDR, and has the latest 10th Generation CPU. The other two models share the CPU with the 2019 Macbook Pro 16″, a 9th generation Intel CPU.
The good thing to note about Mac is, it lives up to the reputation it’s had for many years: you can get quite a lot of years out of using one between replacements.
This one’s got newer parts, faster parts, and bigger capacity parts (faster processor, faster graphics, faster RAM, faster SSD hard drive), and should serve you in good stead for years to come.
