AirTags: How do they work, an FAQ

I’ve been watching your questions pile up on AirTags, and how to keep from losing your stuff.

What’s the range?

Apple says “Bluetooth range”.

“Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy. And itʼs efficient, so thereʼs no need to worry about battery life or data usage.”

What is precision finding?

Precision Finding uses the ultra-wideband U1 chip in AirTag to tell you what direction the AirTag is in relation to your phone.

For example, Bluetooth will tell you, “you’re in the right room” – Precision Finding will tell you, “it’s on your left”.

What phones work with Precision Finding?

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max

What does it do when it isn’t in Bluetooth range?

Lots of people have iPhones. When it isn’t in Bluetooth range of your phone, you can bet it’s probably in Bluetooth range of someone’s iPhone. Use the Find My app to locate it, their iPhones will find it, and relay the location back to you anonymously.

What’s it do when an Android user finds one?

The 8:44 minute mark shows what happens when an Android user scans one. Hold it up to your Android phone, and you get a web page with whatever message you’ve set it to display when you put it in lost mode.

Can the AirTag ping your phone?

No. Tile does this thing where the Tile can make your phone ping if you misplace the phone. AirTag and iPhone only finds the AirTag, not the reverse.

What do iPhones that aren’t on the Precision Finding list do?

Well, for one, they work like an Android phone when scanning the NFC tag, and display the web page. So you aren’t relying on only people with iPhone 11 or 12 to find your AirTag.

How do I attach it to things?

Apple, Hermès, and Moment have keyring holders, loop holders, and stick-on holders meant for fabric, solid, or curved surfaces.

Moment

Belkin

Nomad

Are all making holders for AirTag. I know, you want to stick it to the new AppleTV remote. Moment is your option there.

Are AirTags rechargeable? How long does battery last?

AirTag is not rechargeable. It uses a 2032 battery and lasts “more than a year” under normal use.

Is it waterproof?

AirTag is IP67 water-resistant, meaning it can be submerged 1m for 30 minutes. Obviously this isn’t desirable, but don’t worry about it getting rained or splashed on.
