I’ve reviewed a handful of different socks, and of course have plenty of other socks that I’ve picked up myself. By a large margin, the material that shows up the most in my socks is wool. It keeps my feet warm and comfortable, and they don’t stink due to the natural anti-microbial properties of wool. So, when MP Magic Socks reached out to see if I wanted to check out their wool socks, I quickly agreed.
If you go through the the Indiegogo page for the MP Merino Socks you’re going to see a lot of different terms thrown at you. First off, what’s the 37.5 all about? Well, that’s the temperature (in Celsius; in Fahrenheit it would be 99.5) that the socks are stating they’ll keep your feet at. Again, this is sort of the natural thing for wool – it generally retains just the right amount of body heat to keep you comfortable (even if they get wet). From my perspective, they did keep my feet warm. Not as warm as a heavier pair of socks would get you, but for fall temps, they were comfortable.
Next, the MP Merino Socks talk about the anti-odor and anti-microbial properties. As I mentioned at the outset, this is part-and-parcel of what wool does. They’ve also added copper, silver, and zinc into their threads, to further help keep that down. I will advise you this – whatever the brand of wool sock, if you’re planning to wear them multiple days between washings, just give them at least a day between wears so they can air out a touch – that’ll go a long way in terms of comfort and odors.
Sizing on the MP Merino Socks is pretty generic – S/M or L/XL. The L/XL fit my size 12 feet as expected. The socks do have lycra, so they can stretch, I just can’t vouch for how these will fit other sized feet. I found them comfortable, though I did notice a sort of binding feeling across the top of my foot near the ankle. On other socks, that generally comes from it being twisted when I pull it on, but here it’s more due to the weave.
Oh, and you’l notice that there’s a black fabric panel on the top side of the socks. This is actually a mesh that they’ve woven and placed on top. This helps with breathability, of course, and should help you stay comfortable. Oh, and take a look at the toes. They’ve marked the socks as Left and Right foot (and shaped them for the foot). I like this, as I notice my socks tend to form to a particular foot; this just makes it easier to match them correctly.
