Ring, Amazon’s home security subsidiary, has just announced the Ring Car Cam, a tiny, dual facing dashboard camera that launches February 15. The Ring Car Cam is available for preorder now for $200, but will raise in price to $250 on January 31.
Ring Car Cam features “dual-facing HD cameras”, which can stream live at up to 540p, or save videos to watch later through Cloud Highlights at up to 1080p. It should be noted however the automatic uploading of Cloud highlights and other key features are only available through Ring Protect Go, a $6 per month or $60 per year subscription.
Its not clear how long Ring Car Cam can download footage onto onboard storage, or if it even can in the first place, so if you do decide to buy the Ring Car Cam, be wary of the fact that without the subscription it may be about as useful as a dash cam sized paperweight. Only time and reviews will tell, but Amazon’s standard 30 day return on receipt policy still stands, so it may be worth a try if you’re on the fence.
