Outon S1 Smart Floor Lamp: In Review

If you wanted to, you could probably put RGB throughout your whole house, and make life a technicolor dream. On the other hand, maybe you still want to have some regular lighting, with just a dash of color when it’s not a distraction? If that’s the case, then the Outon S1 Smart Floor Lamp is worth a look.

What is it?

Well, friends, it’s a torchiere-style floor lamp. Much like those ones with the fire-risk halogen bulbs that were all the rage 20 years ago, except with electricity-sipping LEDS. Here, you’ve got the color temperature adjustable top light (which is also dimmable), along with an LED light strip that goes down the central pole, allowing you to add all manner of RGB effects (pulse, chase, react to music, solid, and so on). You can also turn the two lights on and off independently of each other, and both are dimmable.

What’s it like putting it together?

So long as you’re comfortable with a screw driver, you’ll be just fine. The main thing you’re assembling is the central pole. This is a hidden track, basically. You’ve got supports that screw in tying one piece to the next, top to bottom. Once that’s together, you put the RGB light strip in, and cover it with a soft plastic diffuser. Thread on the top light and bottom base, and you’re good to go. It’s pretty quick to go together, in all honesty. Once together, you’ll notice that it can be a touch wobbly (given the narrow pole and large light at the top), but I was never worried about it falling over or coming apart.

How do you set the lighting effects?

As you would expect with anything with the word “smart” in it’s name, the Outon S1 Smart Floor Lamp has an attendant app, called Smart Life. In there, you can turn the light on or off, set schedules, adjust the exact RGB color you want on the light strip, and adjust the color temperature of the top light. Just with a number of other RGB lighting options. Where the Outon seperates itself a bit is the fact that it has a physical remote as well. No need to get your phone out, just use the physical buttons on the remote to cycle through the scenes you have set, turn lights on or off, and adjust brightness.

Who’s it for?

The Outon S1 Smart Floor Lamp is a good option for anyone who needs a little extra light in a room, and also wouldn’t mind the ability to throw some color as well. We had this setup in our dining room for a bit, and the RGB effect was handy to put some light in there in the evenings. Since then, it’s moved to my WFH area, where I use it to provide some backlighting for my video calls. Want to get one? It’s available for $119.99 from the store that sells everything, Amazon.
