Folding phones are the future, finally

I’m not entirely convinced folding phones are THE future, but they’re definitely in our collective future. Samsung have a more affordable folding phone (flip phone? we need a better term) on the way.

So far, the folding phone revival has been expensive. So here’s a model number that predicts something for everyone: SM-F415.

Let me break it down for you:

  • SM – Samsung
  • F – Folding
  • 415 – as model numbers go, there’s been an F915 Galazy Z fold, F900 Galaxy Fold, and F700 Galaxy Z Flip. If the world makes sense (and that’s asking a lot in the year 2020) then 415 should be on the budget end of the scale.

It supports 802.11 (Wi-Fi) a, b, g, n and ac. There’s no 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) here. That can mean two things: Pocket Lint suggests it could be an older chipset. The choice behind that is, it’s expensive to do 802.11ax, hard to put antennae that will take good advantage of it, and it’ll get all the 802.11ac benefits of talking to an 802.11ax Wi-Fi device on ac wave 2.

All that is to say, just because it’s on 802.11ac doesn’t mean it won’t go faster when talking to a faster router – it could.

There’s not a whole lot more information available at this time. But if you want a fold-er, with that satisfying slapping closed when you hang up a call (OK, I know, no one actually makes calls anymore), this might be one in budget.
