PNY RP60: rugged storage on the go

PNY RP60 SSD

Earlier this week, we brought you word of a blazing-fast internal SSD from PNY. If you find yourself firmly in laptop land, you’re not being overlooked. Of course they have thumb drives, but they’ve also just announced a brand-new external SSD that’s ready to head out with you. Meet the PNY RP60.

PNY RP60 SSD

What is it?

Well, the PNY RP60 is a portable hard drive. Or, to be more specific, a portal SSD. I remember way back when and I had a portable hard drive with a footprint similar to that one. Wonderfully compact, but due to the platters, I needed to ensure it was in a carry case when I was on the go. Not so with this one. As it’s an SSD, there are no moving parts to worry about damaging in transport.

PNY RP60: how it’s protected

If you’re not putting it in a case, then there must be protection built in. Sure, an SSD starts from a point of robustness, but you still want to keep those 0s and 1s safe. The outside is wrapped in silicone, not unlike many of the phone case options that are out there. This helps the device to reach both an IP654 and IP655 rating that protects it against water and dust intrusion. It also helps to protect it from drops of up to 3 meters. In fact, they’re so confident in this protection, there’s a built in loop on the case so you can clip this to your bag or belt and just head on out.

The storage tech

Portable storage is good, but we’re also an impatient bunch. The PNY RP60 offers write speeds of up to 1800 MB/s, and read speeds that can hit 2000 MB/s. This is due to the memory inside, yes, but also with the USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection that you’ve got. With the USB-C connector, this should easily connect to a modern laptop, phone, and/or tablet, easily moving files around. It also comes standard with Acronis True Image software, so you can setup a backup routine to protect those important files.

When and where to get one

We should note that the PNY RP60 is not available quite yet. It’s planned to be released next month (April 2024) in two capacities. You can get it in 1TB for $99.99 or 2TB for $179.99. Once it’s available, we’ll see about getting a review unit in, so be on the lookout for that. When it is available, you’ll find it at Amazon, or direct from pny.com
