I’ve long been a fan of board games, and have enjoyed playing in a number of TTRPG campaigns over the years. Every now and again, you’ll see a board game that tries to recapture the fun of a TTRPG, and give you replayability without the need for a dedicated person to run the session. One of the latest to strive for that is Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan.
Simply put, Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan is a cooperative 2-4 player game that can have a session run in as little as 45 minutes (one presumes that’s after you’ve got the mechanics and system somewhat understood), with the ability to extend the sessions longer if you want to. In other words, it sounds like it’s hitting a sort of Goldilocks balance in terms of timing. On top of that, it looks like there are some interesting mechanics, and a preset flow that lets you know where in the game you. Oh, and if you want to have a videogame element to it, there are even hardness settings to the game, dictating how much you can plan out with your fellow players, or even incorporate a timer to tighten things up.
Add in some lovely artwork and details minis, and Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan looks to be a pretty compelling option to add to your game shelf. Do note, given all that is included in the box, this is not a bargain-hunter game that you sometimes find on Kickstarter. Here, earlybird pricing starts at $100 for the base game, or $130 if you want to go for the expansion as well. They’ve hit their funding goal, with the campaign running until October 11, 2022. campaign page / mighty-boards.com
