MEATER Board – A Knapsack News Review

The other month, we brought you word of a new – and very non-electronic offering – from Meater, their own cutting board (you can see that here). Well, we’ve been spending some time with it since then, and have been using it to slice up all sorts of good food, from veggies to slow-smoked steaks.

What is it?

The MEATER Board is, well, a generously-sized cutting board made of bamboo. Seriously, at just under 20″ x 15″ (and over an inch thick), this is a board that demands a good amount of space. In our smaller kitchen, this meant finding space to put it on the counter top was a challenge. What I settled on, most of the time, was putting over two (unlit) burners on the stove, and that gave me plenty of space and stability. And with the outer channel and collection cup, I didn’t have to worry about spilling juices all over the stove.

What’s it like using it?

For starters, I really liked the real estate you’ve got. There’s plenty of room for chopping up a pile of vegetables without needing to clear things off, and even plenty of room to let the steaks rest before you do anything with the meat. In fact, that’s another great capability that should not be overlooked. With the sturdy block, and carved-in hand holds, this is a great board for moving your meat – be it a brisket, chicken, or kabobs – from the grille into the kitchen. No more needing to find another dish or tray to move things in that just has to be cleaned – here, the MEATER Board can easily handle both duties.

How about cleaning it?

Cleaning the MEATER Board is a cinch. While there are some marks from the knife (as with any cutting board) they’re not deep gouges, so things are pretty smooth for washing down with soap and warm water. And, as with any wooden or bamboo cutting board, rubbing in some oil will help the longevity of the board.

Do we recommend it?

Frankly, it’s a great board. It’s just a big one, so make sure you’ve got the room for it on your counters, as well as a place to store it. Or, if you don’t have the counter space, but always wanted a butcherblock surface to do your food prep, well, this can stand in for that. You just might be working on your stovetop, or on an existing table or bench.

Still, it gets the job done, and the MEATER Board will give you a large and flexible food prep surface. If you want to pick one up, they’re available for $129.95 directly from meater.com
