In some ways, smartwatches have almost become a commodity. Yes, there are the high-end options out there, and those will certainly remain the case. But we also have a wide, wide variety of choices down on the bargain end of the scale. Today, we’re focusing in on the midrange, with a watch that offers some features we don’t frequently see there. Time to meet the Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Special Edition.
Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Special Edition Smartwatch: what it is
If you’re thinking that Kospet is familiar, it’s likely because we introduced you to them back in 2022 (seen here), and then we also reviewed the Kospet Tank M2 over on WWR (seen here). The Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Special Edition Smartwatch is very much the next iteration of that M2 that we reviewed earlier. The screen is larger and upgraded to AMOLED, the processor has been changed out, and memory has been doubled, just to mention a few specs. It also comes with additional sensors (as compared to the M2) allowing you to track barometric pressure, check your direction via a compass, and even measure your blood pressure (and not just your pulse rate).
What sets it apart
As we mentioned at the outset, the Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Smartwatch sits in the midrange, and it’s got details that set it apart from the pack. Some of it is due to the specs that we briefly ran through in the prior section (and are fully detailed down below). In fact, that large and vivid screen is what is sure to grab many an eye.
However, we’d draw your attention to some of the details that make this a rather robust watch. First and foremost, that 56 x 43mm case is wrapped in stainless steel, with the caseback made of a fiberglass-reinforced resin as well as stainless steel. Most often we see cases that are fully resin (aka plastic), so seeing that steel exterior is a rarity. If you want to protect the display even more, you’ve got a slice of Gorilla Glass you can stick on as well. Furthermore, the fact that you can get a stainless steel bracelet (and not just a polyurethane one) is another rare thing to find.
For me, a steel bracelet elevates any watch, and can make a smartwatch feel less like you’re trying to take a piece of workout gear into the office. While there are extra links included, none of them are half-links unfortunately. That meant that, for me, sizing the bracelet (and they include a sizing tool as well) the bracelet was either just a touch too tight, or a bit too loose for my tastes. I opted towards looser, but more commonly went back to the included resin strap.
Using the Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Special Edition
That’s where the rubber meets the road for any smartwatch, of course. The first thing I do with any of these is set a quick alarm, and see if you can get it to go off completely silently (aka vibrating alerts). Why? That’s how I get up in the mornings. All of these watches have vibration capability, so being able to run a silent alarm should be doable. So, could it do it? With the watch itself in silent mode… the alarm still went off audibly. Perhaps not the end of the world for you, but for my setup, that’s key. Frankly, this feels like something a future firmware upgrade could address as well.
So, that just meant I had another watch on my wrist in order to wake up in the mornings without bothering my wife. This also meant I was able compare how the Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Special Edition did with its sleep tracking. The good news here is that it did a good job of determining when I feel asleep, and when I woke up. Overall stage tracking was pretty comparable to the watch I normally wear at night, as was the overnight heart rate tracking. The one oddity here was in the app, it would always tell me I went to bed too late, no matter what time I went to sleep. Again, seems like a future update could address this.
Once I was up, it was time to head out and get active. Here again, I was comparing this against another watch, to see how the GPS tracking was, as well as the heart rate recording. On the GPS, it is worth noting that the watch does have GPS on-board, so you don’t need to have it relying on your phone to track your route. Once I kicked it on, it found the satellites, and we were off to the trail. It gave an accurate accounting of the mileage I logged, and the HR tracking was pretty close to what I saw on the other (control) device as well.
One note on the HR tracking – I’ve never found two devices (unless they were from the same manufacturer and have the same sensor) that report exactly the same heart rate. This is due to variances in where you’re wearing the watch, the fitment, and just how the hardware is measuring things. They’ll be relatively close, though. So, is that variance something you need to worry about? Not unless you’re tracking it for health-related reasons. For most of us, though, it’s not a concern. Just settle in with the device you have, and roll with the numbers you’re seeing.
Wrapping things up
So, as you can tell, the Kospet Tank M3 Ultra Special Edition has a lot going on for it. While we only covered a small slice of the functionality (and real-world usage), you can see the full list down below in terms of what it can do. While the watch itself only talks to the Kospet Fit app, you can get that data communicating into your phone’s health (Apple or Google) app as well. If you want to pick one up, it looks like it’s available for $159.99 (though Black Friday sales are knocking that lower) over at Amazon, or for $149.99 directly from kospet.com
