In Review: Twin TempSpike Premium

Mean thermometers are my favorite things. I do a lot of slow cooking so I need to know the internal temperature of my food at all times and I regularly stab everything from potatoes to chicken breast with a ThermPro Lighting. So when they announced the Twin TempSpike Premium I was intruiged.

The Twin TempSpike Premium consists of two temperature sensing spikes and a base station. The base station works up to 500 feet away from the spikes and you can easily pair the device with your phone to keep track of cook times and internal temperature. I used these guys on a very long cook this weekend – about nine hours – and as you can see they got pretty stained but they’re still in solid condition.

Is the Twin TempSpike Premium a good thermometer?

Yes. In fact it is probably one of the best you can get. At $104, it’s surprisingly affordable and because of its 500 foot range it’s one of the best on the market. I stuck both of them into one pork shoulder and let them offer competing temperatures at different points in the cook. The resulting meat was perfectly done and I absolutely have the Twin TempSpike to thank.

There is a certainly a type of cook that eschews thermometers entirely and I consider those cooks to be fools and charlatans. A good meat and kitchen thermometer is a godsend and it lets you measure everything from a pork chop to a loaf of sourdough (I bet you didn’t know that your boule needs to hit 210 degrees Farenheit).

The Twin lasts for about ten hours on one charge and uses a standard USB cable.

If you do a lot of outdoor cooking, this is the perfect companion. It lets you measure two pieces of meat at once and works with ThermPro’s excellent app. If you’re looking for something in the home, I can only recommend a device like the Lightning simply because it lets you take a reading instantly and can be put away without having to cool down the spike. You could also be like me and have three thermometers including a wacky TP829 with four probes in case you need to measure every sausage on the grill. And, if you’re smart, that’s exactly what you’ll do.
