Safeguard Your Windows 10 System Against Malware – – In a recent development, Windows 10 users have been warned about a new malware campaign that disguises itself as a legitimate Windows update. This deceptive tactic aims to trick unsuspecting users into installing malicious software on their systems. The threat was discovered by cybersecurity researchers, who have issued a warning to raise awareness and prevent potential victims from falling prey to this insidious scheme.

According to Dr. Web, the malware appears in ISO files that are downloadable from torrent sites. Thus far they have identified the following ISO files – basically copies of an original Windows 10 disk – as dangerous:

  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.2728 + Office 2021 x64 by BoJlIIIebnik RU.iso
  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.2846 + Office 2021 x64 by BoJlIIIebnik RU.iso
  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.2846 x64 by BoJlIIIebnik RU.iso
  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.2913 + Office 2021 x64 by BoJlIIIebnik [RU, EN].iso
  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.2913 x64 by BoJlIIIebnik [RU, EN].iso

The malware is called Trojan.Clipper.231 and changes copied crypto addresses in the Windows clipboard with its own. According to Dr. Web, thieves have been able to steal $19,000 in crypto.

The malware campaign primarily targets Windows 10 users, taking advantage of the widespread adoption of the operating system. It is crucial for users to remain vigilant and exercise caution when encountering unexpected update prompts or suspicious emails claiming to be from Microsoft.

How to Safeguard Your Windows 10 System Against Malware

First, don’t download illegal torrents of Microsoft products. This goes without saying.

It is important to note that Microsoft does not distribute updates via email or unsolicited links.

To protect against this threat, users are advised to follow these security best practices:

  1. Be cautious of unsolicited emails: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious sources, especially those claiming to be Windows updates. Verify the authenticity of any update notifications by visiting the official Microsoft website or using the Windows Update feature within the operating system.
  2. Keep software up to date: Regularly update your operating system, antivirus software, and other applications to ensure you have the latest security patches and protection against known vulnerabilities.
  3. Use reputable security software: Install and maintain a reliable antivirus or antimalware solution that can detect and block malicious software.
  4. Enable automatic updates: Configure your system to automatically install updates from trusted sources, such as Microsoft, to ensure you receive the latest security patches promptly.
  5. Educate yourself and others: Stay informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and share this knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues to help them stay protected.

In conclusion, Windows 10 users must remain vigilant against the growing threat of malware campaigns that exploit social engineering tactics to deceive and compromise unsuspecting victims. By staying informed, adopting security best practices, and exercising caution when encountering unexpected update prompts or suspicious emails, users can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to such malicious schemes. Remember, cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, so it is crucial to stay proactive and prioritize cybersecurity to safeguard your digital life. Stay informed, stay protected.
