Gunnar Fallout Vault 33 Sunglasses: in review

Back in March, we brought you word of a new pair of glasses, the Gunnar Fallout Vault 33 (you can see that here). Along with the popularity of the new Fallout show, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the first batch of those glasses completely sold out. Things are back up for pre-order, with delivery anticipated for August 2024. If you’re wondering if you want to pre-order, read on to see our hands-on take on the Gunnar Fallout Vault 33 Sunglasses.

Gunnar Fallout Vault 33: the packaging

While a lot of selecting a pair of glasses (be they computer, sun, or Rx) comes down to the look of the frames and the fit on their face, that’s not where Gunnar stops. They extend the branding to the microfiber cleaning cloth, the microfiber pouch, and even the hard metal case that the glasses come in.

Now, that case, that looks like something that’s ready for a post-apocalyptic future. In the mean time, it should do a great job of protecting your glasses in your bag, backpack, or even just banging around in the car. When you need something more compact, that’s where the microfiber pouch comes in handy. This makes it easy to slip the glasses into an inside pocket, and quickly clean them when you pull them out.

The fit

For any pair of glasses, how those frames fit your face is critical. One aspect is the actual physical sizing and how it matches your own topography, and then there’s the visual fit. Myself, I have a big ol’ noggin, so finding glasses that actually fit my face and don’t have arms that dig into my ears can be tricky. Past that, finding anything that verges towards the oversize lens look is all but impossible.

That is, until I got the Gunnar Fallout Vault 33 sunglasses on my face. With a frame width of 139mm, they can fit on even a big head like mine. As you can see from the photos, the 145mm temple length (on the arms) also helps them to get back sit snugly behind my ears, without things need to sit at an angle. In other words, they fit great.

Now, if you are used to wearing plastic or resin-framed glasses, you will notice the weight of these. I found the nose pads adequate for the glasses, but after a few hours, you will get some pressure on the bridge of your nose. It wasn’t a deal breaker for me, but it is worth noting. Who knows, maybe down the road there’ll be a premium version that opts for titanium to lighten things up a bit.

The aesthetics

If I had to classify the Gunnar Fallout Vault 33, I’d say they’re something of a cross between aviators and those riding/driving glasses from the 60s. Front-on, you’ve got the square aviator shape, further reinforced with with the wire arms coming back (done in a green that is both complementary and a pop of color). Viewed from the side, though, you realize that the frames are actually wider, giving some additional protection on the top and sides. Sure, not quite safety glasses, but they will help cut down some additional glare getting in.

Wrapping things up

All in all, I’ve really enjoyed wearing the $99 Gunnar Fallout Vault 33 sunglasses, and they’ve been my go-to grab when I’m heading out the door this summer. As we mentioned at the outset, they are not currently in stock, but you can pre-order them for later this summer.

You can also opt for these just as blue-light-blocking glasses, or even opt for their Rx option (which does raise prices a bit). This is the first of a few different frames we’ll be looking at from Gunnar, so if these aren’t the ones for you, keep a look out for some of those other reviews. If these ARE for you, then you’ll want to check them out and order over at either Amazon (for the clear lenses) or Gunnar for all of the options. gunnar.com
