Gunnar Cupertino: block all kinds of light

Gunnar Cupertino Full Set

Earlier this month, we brought you word of a brand new Gunnar release that celebrated the Year of the Dragon (you can see that here). Of course, they’ve got a wide range of blue-light blocking glasses (both with and without prescription lenses). As we were reviewing their catalog, we also found another pair that look to offer a wide range of flexibility – the Gunnar Cupertino.

How they work

If there’s any sort of frames that you’ve got that you’ve changed lenses on, you’re usually actually removing lenses (that are snapped into place), so that’s usually reserved for a full-on replacement of a scratched lens. If you’re turning your eyeglasses into sunglasses – and it’s not reacting to sunlight – then you’re clipping something onto the front of your frames, on top of the Rx lenses. Here, we’ve actually got a magnetic component that keeps the lenses surrounded by acetate (for when they’re off of the main frame body), and keeps them tightly locked in and aligned after you’ve swapped them out.

Who would want these?

That is a fair question. For anyone in front of a screen all day, blue-light blocking lenses like the Gunnar Cupertino have are going to be beneficial for reducing eye strain. If you’re heading outside, then the ability to swap those out to sunglasses is an added benefit. On the other hand, if you’re driving in the early morning or early evening, you can go to the amber tint to help cut down the glare without ruining what you can actually see. Finally, if you just need some extra protection over your eyes (say, from wind or dust), then the clear lenses would get the job done. Your use cases are going to dictate what you’ll see in this setup, but us? We like the flexibility that the Gunnar Cupertino look to offer.

Wrapping things up

Do note, that while there are a number of Gunnar styles that offer a prescription option, the Gunnar Cupertino does not. If you’ve got good vision (or rock contact lenses), then you’ll be good to go. Now, on to the pricing. To get the whole set of lenses (which is four different types), you’re looking at $200 for the frames and those. If you want just the amber lenses (for blue light blocking) then it’s $150. Finally, if you want two sets of lenses (blue light + clear, blue light + amber, or blue light + sun), then it’s $175. You can check out all the details, and order your own, directly over at gunnar.com
