DJI announced the Mavic Air 2 with a 48 megapixel camera. If you’re into drone aerial photography, this is for you.
DJI has been leading the consumer / prosumer drone category for a few years now. The problems with all UAV flight are pretty well understood – you want to have a good camera, but good cameras add weight, which means you need a larger air frame or more battery, which… adds weight.
Basically, if you can optimize flight time and weight, you have a cool product. But what happens when the camera gets lighter is pretty cool.
In the Mavic Air 2, DJI has a 48mp camera, with a large 1/2 inch image sensor, that can shoot 4K at 60 frames per second.
It also captures enhanced HDR for photo, video, and panorama shots.
All that’s cool, but what if you’re planning some drone-like pod-racing footage? What you really want is 8K hyperlapse. Which it can do.
Remember at the beginning, I mentioned flight time being a function of weight and battery? Mavic Air 2 has a 34 minute flight time, and a 240 minute battery life on the remote control.
One of the big concerns about flying drones has been avoidance of objects. DJI has added APAS 3.0, their latest version of their advanced pilot assistance system. Basically, it allows you to fly forward and backward avoiding objects in the path of the drone.
Because you want to see where you’re flying, but doing it all in 4k would be a lot to ask, Mavic Air 2 has 1080P 30fps vision back to the remote. They call this OcuSync 2.0 10km.
Besides the stunning images that Mavic Air 2 captures, it’s got what looks to be some really powerful object tracking, so that you don’t have to work as hard to follow the moving person or vehicle in your shot.
