Imagine you’re a criminal mastermind city in a gritty cybercafe in Neo Tokyo. You’re about to hack the Gibson when the authorities trace you down and get ready to pounce. Your lean, mean Dell is on the desk running Arch Linux and you know that if they get their hands on your machine, you’re toast.
Luckily you have the BusKill.
The BusKill is a $99 device that connects to your laptop via USB. It consists of a magnetic connector and a USB dongle. When the connector disconnects from the dongle the computer can shut down, restart, or even self-destruct. The whole kit includes the cable, dongle, and compatible software. It works with Linux, Windows 10, and MacOS.
The team is currently crowdfunding the product on Crowdsupply so it might take a little while to ship but I can definitely imagine a situation where I would use the heck out of this thing. Device theft is one thing, but data theft could be disastrous.
The product is shipping on Jun 01, 2022 and the product looks to be getting funded to the tune of a few thousand so far. It’s a clever idea and a great way to keep your data, keys, and wallets safe from terrible interlopers.
