Brunt Workwear McKenna Hoodie: in review

Brunt Workwear McKenna

Now, I don’t know about you, but a good hoodie can be a key part of what I’m wearing during the week, especially when I’m headed off to the woods to go camping. While the products that Brunt Workwear produce are actually intended for the jobsite, that doesn’t mean those of us not in the trades can’t take advantage of what they’ve created. So, that’s how I ended up testing out the Brunt Workwear McKenna Hoodie as a camping and traveling layer.

Brunt Workwear McKenna Hoodie: what it is

If this shirt was showing up in an outdoors gear catalog, it would be labelled something like a technical sunshirt. So, if that’s the arena you’re coming from (I count myself in that group), that’s how you should think about it. The Brunt Workwear McKenna Hoodie is rated as a UPF 50+ shirt, which is great for keeping your skin protected. But then that begs the question – are you going to get too warm?

Wearing it

In my experience, the answer to that question is “no”. The cotton-poly blend is pretty breathable to begin with, and then the stretch mesh panels on the side allow for some extra ventilation. The material is thinner as well, so that helps with wicking your sweat away, and if (or when) it gets damp, it dries off pretty quickly.

For both camping and travel, I found it to be a great layer to toss on over a t-shirt and get going. The hood itself wasn’t going to add a lot of warmth, but it’s a way to cover your head and neck from the sun. And that hood is constructed to be able to work with a hardhat, so popping it up over (or under) a baseball cap isn’t going to be a problem.

Wrapping things up

Given that the Brunt Workwear McKenna Hoodie is designed to be put to hard use on the job site, that means us more casual folks are going to have a well-constructed sun shirt that’s going to hold up to daily life, and be just fine if you find yourself banging around in the woods. In my book, a thinner hoodie like this is super handy to have in most closets, and the branding on the shirt is fairly unobtrusive, so it’s not going to seem like you’re trying to “fit in” like everyone in their Carhartt jackets.

The Brunt Workwear McKenna Hoodie is available in four different colors, and in sizing that runs from S to 4XL for $49.99. Don’t want a hoodie? That’s fine, you can also opt for it in either a short sleeve ($35.99) or long sleeve shirt ($39.99) format as well.
