Apple Launches iOS 17 Security Update: Apple’s much-anticipated iOS 17 update is finally here, and it’s bringing a host of new and enhanced security features to the table. The update is particularly focused on safeguarding iPhone users who are more susceptible to cyberattacks and spyware, such as journalists, activists, and human rights defenders. However, it also includes features for the general public, like advanced anti-web tracking and secure storage and sharing of phishing-resistant passkeys.
Among the most significant additions in the Apple iOS 17 Security Update is the expansion of Lockdown Mode to Apple Watches, in addition to iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This is a timely move, considering recent spyware exploits have shown the ability to compromise Apple Watch users.
Apple iOS 17 Security Update: Lockdown Mode
Lockdown Mode operates by selectively disabling certain features, like iMessage and HomeKit, that have been exploited by spyware creators in the past, thereby making it significantly harder to breach a device and pilfer its data. The updated Lockdown Mode in iOS 17 also automatically strips geolocation data from photos when shared, preventing the inadvertent disclosure of the user’s location.
Apple iOS 17 Security Update: Wi-Fi & Web Tracking
It also prevents iPhones from automatically joining insecure Wi-Fi networks and blocks connections to 2G cellular networks. These measures aim to thwart a variety of cellular-based exploits often used by cell site simulators, or “stingrays”, which are controversial devices used by law enforcement to intercept phone locations and communications.
The Safari browser in iOS 17 now has enhanced anti-web tracking features. It removes tracking information from web addresses, making it harder for websites and advertisers to track your online activity. This feature can be applied to all browsing sessions or just private ones, and it doesn’t impact your regular browsing experience.
iOS 17: Passkeys
The update also brings improvements to passkeys, the phishing-resistant password alternative that lets you log in without the fear of password theft. These passkeys can now be shared with friends and family using end-to-end encryption, ensuring only the intended recipients can access them.
iOS: Check In
A new feature called Check In allows iPhone users to share their estimated arrival time at a destination with friends. It tracks the user’s real-time location and sends an alert if something seems amiss. This location data is end-to-end encrypted, eliminating the need for third-party apps that might sell your location data to advertisers.
Lastly, the Live Transcription feature is a boon for those who want to avoid spam or scam calls. Rather than answering or declining a call, which can alert the caller that the line is active, Live Transcription converts the caller’s voice into text displayed on the screen in real time.
