There was this dream for a few years where people had the idea to make all the parts of a cellphone modular, so that you could upgrade parts over time – bigger battery, better camera, different motherboard, etc. The phone dream was just that– a dream within a dream.
Then came Framework, who made a laptop. And now, they’ve updated it with a new main board and CPU.
The reason why this is such a big deal is, historically, making things modular has a reputation for making them thicker, bulkier, and limiting innovation by adding the constraint of keeping common connectors and parts sizes and shapes. Framework seems to have solved those problems.
The Framework announcement isn’t just a new logic board. You can update your last year’s Framework with the new board and CPU, or you can decide to just get an all new one, with improved lid assembly for improved stiffness.
Here’s the upgrades:
- New motherboard with 12th gen Intel CPU
- CNC top lid instead of stamped aluminum
- Improved battery standby life
- 2.5 Gbps Ethernet module
You can purchase it all these ways:
- Whole laptop (obviously)
- Main board with CPU
- Top cover
- Or an upgrade kit that includes main board with CPU and the new top assembly
The kits are on pre-order now, requiring a 100 USD/EUR/GBP deposit, and will ship July 2022. Learn more at frame.work
