Samsung has recently expanded its high-speed 990 Pro SSDs lineup with a new 4TB option, aiming to cater to the needs of gamers and content creators who require ample storage space.
The company claims that this new model offers the “fastest random read performance among PCIe 4.0 interface consumer SSDs on the market,” along with enhanced read/write speeds, power efficiency, and longevity.
Samsung 990 Pro SSD 4TB Model – Specs
The 4TB SSD 990 Pro, available with or without a heat sink, boasts a sleek design that can seamlessly fit into ultra-thin laptops or gaming consoles. It leverages Samsung’s V-NAND chips, a PCIe 4.0 interface, and an upgraded controller to achieve read speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and write speeds of 6,900 MB/s.
These speeds are consistent with its 1TB and 2TB counterparts. Random speeds are also on par with the smaller models at 1,600K and 1,550K IOPS read/write, respectively. However, the 4TB model offers double the endurance, from 1,200 TBW (terabytes written) to 2,400 TBW, over the 2TB version, courtesy of its larger capacity. It also features a cache size of 4GB, twice that of its predecessors.
While the 990 Pro may not match the speed of the latest PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs (capable of hitting 11,700 MB/s read and 9,500 MB/s write speeds), it is one of the fastest PCIe 4.0 models available. Samsung also claims it to be 50% more power-efficient than the previous 980 Pro, making it an ideal choice for PC expansion and consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 5.
The 4TB capacity could be particularly appealing for PS5 users, considering the growing size of AAA games.
The 990 Pro 4TB is set to retail for $345/$355 for the regular and heats ink versions, respectively, starting in October at Samsung.com and select retailers. This is more than double the price of the 2TB version, which is currently discounted to $135 on Amazon from its usual price of $190. However, discounts on the 4TB model are expected once it becomes widely available in stores. samsung.com
