The Polaroid I-2, the latest offering from the iconic instant camera company, is a unique blend of nostalgia and modernity. It’s a camera that harks back to the heyday of instant film, while incorporating contemporary features that could entice serious photographers.
Polaroid I-2
The charm of instant film, with its quirks and idiosyncrasies, is retained, but the I-2 also offers a suite of modern amenities. Historically, Polaroid has been synonymous with instant gratification and point-and-shoot simplicity.
In the digital era, the wait for a Polaroid to develop may seem lengthy, and the images, with their soft, saturated quality, can feel distinctly lo-fi compared to the sharpness of smartphone photos.
But the Polaroid I-2 is a departure from this trend. The I-2’s most notable feature is its price tag.
Price
Retailing at $599, it costs four times as much as the next priciest camera in Polaroid’s range, the Now+.
Features
However, this premium price point comes with the fastest lens in the current Polaroid lineup, a 98mm f/8, which the company claims is roughly equivalent to a 50mm f/2.8 on a 35mm camera. The lens is constructed from acrylic and polycarbonate, not glass. Polaroid asserts that this choice doesn’t compromise the image quality while keeping the camera’s cost from skyrocketing.
The lens is a point of pride for Polaroid, and the company has even enlisted the expertise of two retired Olympus engineers to help design it. The I-2 is a product of four years of development, and it’s evident that a great deal of care and attention has been invested in its creation.
The camera’s matte black body, complemented by dark silver and red accents, exudes a sense of sophistication. It’s the only camera in Polaroid’s current lineup that can use standard lens filters, adding to its appeal for serious photographers.
However, the I-2 isn’t designed for capturing fast-paced action, with a top shutter speed of only 1/250 of a second. This, coupled with the 640 ASA of standard i-Type film, can make achieving the right exposure in bright sunlight a challenge. One of the I-2’s standout features is its onboard manual settings, a first for current generation Polaroid cameras.
While the Now+ offers some options via an app, only the I-2 provides complete control of the aperture and shutter speed on the camera itself. This is adjusted via a single ring around the lens, simplifying the process for users. In essence, the Polaroid I-2 is a nod to the past, while embracing the future. It’s a camera that embodies the spirit of instant film photography, while offering the modern features that today’s photographers demand. polaroid.com
