Way back in early 2008, a lawsuit was brought against Google for selling Pixel and Pixel XL phones – knowingly – with bad microphone connections. Adding salt to the wound, apparently some of the phones they provided as replacements were faulty as well. Cue the lawyers!
Class action lawsuits being what they are, things were just finally brought to a close. What this means is that there’s a pool of money left (after the lawyers made their hefty cut) to pay out to folks who were impacted by the bad devices. Here’s how it all breaks down:
- If you bought a Pixel or Pixel XL made before January 4th, 2017, and it wasn’t replaced by a phone produced after January 3rd, 2017 (or refurbished after June 5th, 2017) – then you get $20, whether or not the mic problem hit you
- If you want to get more out of the Goog, you’ll need documentation to get either $350 (if you had one phone with the problem) or $500 (for two or more phones)
- Additionally, if you had to pay an insurance deductible for your replacement phone, they’re reimbursing that amount as well.
You’ve got until October 17th, 2019 to make a claim opt-out (if you want your own lawsuit). Then, you wait. A hearing will be held on December 6th to approve the settlement, and then payouts would happen about three months later.
