Google Chrome, now a 15-year-old veteran in the world of web browsers, is marking its milestone birthday with a fresh redesign and enhanced safety features. The familiar white background is making way for a more personalized experience as Google introduces background customization via its Material You design language.
This new design language brings a spectrum of colors to the table, along with a more seamless switch between light and dark modes. To experience this new aesthetic, users can click on a newly introduced button labeled “Customize Chrome” located at the bottom of the homepage. This action triggers a pop-out that presents a variety of themes, with color schemes spanning from sunny yellows to deep purples and everything in between.
Chrome instantly adapts to the selected color, allowing users to experiment with different hues before settling on a favorite. The same interface also offers the option to set the browser in light mode, dark mode, or to align it with the computer’s settings. These settings can vary depending on the Google account in use, and for those who prefer the classic look, the standard white background remains an option. Google has also expanded the options in Chrome’s drop-down menu, aiming to provide quicker access to tools like the Google Password Manager and various extensions.
Users can now explore a public preview of Chrome’s revamped web store, described as “fresh and modern”. The store now features an AI-powered extensions tab and an Editor’s spotlight section, offering curated recommendations for downloads. While the birthday updates are predominantly focused on design, Google is also taking strides to bolster its Safe Browsing technology. Instead of updating its internal list of potentially harmful sites with phishing or malware threats every 30 to 60 minutes, Chrome will now perform real-time checks. Google asserts that 60 percent of malicious sites have a lifespan of less than 10 minutes, and this shift in approach is expected to enhance protection by 25 percent. google.com
