So this is an interesting thing. Gibson is adding a hole to the top side of its acoustic guitars in an effort to allow more sound to come up towards the player vs. out towards the audience.
It’s very weird.
Now I realize it looks silly and, more important, could reduce the structural integrity of a really nice guitar but I mean… ehh? Maybe?
The hole is called the Gibson Player Port and the storied guitar maker describes it thus:

So what Gibson is trying to do here is create a guitar for guitarists who want to hear themselves. Therefore they’re making a guitar for the bedroom noodler and Soundcloud generation who is more about theatrics than technique, which is absolutely fine. I personally think the hole looks silly but if I can sit there and hear more of the sound coming out of the front come out of the side into my face then maybe I’d practice more? I don’t know.
Anyway, the Reddit folks are having a blast making fun of it and while I would never buy one, I guess at least the company is trying something new. Maybe I’d buy one and just put cardboard over the hole.
The holy guitars range from $999 to $1,999 and are all American made.
