The chip shortage has been a hot topic over the past year, with companies worldwide suffering from lower supply due to a plethora of causes. One of these companies is Canon, which’s printers feature brand-locked toner cartridges sold at an extreme markup. Each Canon-created toner cartridge is fitted with a chip identifying itself as a Canon-branded cartridge, allowing for the company to lock its printers to only print using their expensive Cartridges.
Due to Canon’s heavy reliance on chips in a time in which chips are in high demand, Canon printers have begun identifying official Canon-branded toner cartridges as counterfeit due to a lack of identifying chips. Ironically enough, this has caused the company to offer workarounds in order for users to manipulate their Canon printers into accepting unidentifiable cartridges.
If that isn’t poetic justice, I don’t know what is.
