As Apple typically releases new versions in the fourth quarter of each year, the tech world is buzzing with anticipation for the official replacement: macOS 14 Sonoma.

Apple has scheduled an event for September 12, 2023, and it’s expected that the launch of macOS Sonoma will follow shortly after, within the fourth quarter of the year. This aligns with the historical pattern of macOS releases, which have typically occurred in October or November. The name “Sonoma” is a nod to Northern California’s wine country, a region not far from Apple’s headquarters. As for the macOS Sonoma beta, it’s currently available for both developers and public testers. To access it, users need a compatible Mac device and macOS Ventura 13.4 or later.

The new macOS Sonoma is set to introduce a host of new features. The home screen will now feature interactive widgets, a concept that debuted with macOS Big Sur in 2020 but was previously confined to the Notification Center. These widgets will be fully interactive and can be placed anywhere on the main screen. Video conferencing is also getting a boost with several new features.
A new video menu will allow users to see what screen they are sharing, and a high-performance mode will increase frame rate and reduce latency. In a move to embrace the gaming community, Apple is introducing a Game Mode for better performance. This mode prioritizes the game being played for GPU and CPU use, which Apple claims will result in reduced latency with controllers and AirPods, improved in-game responsiveness, and consistent frame rates. Safari, Apple’s web browser, is also getting a revamp with new web apps, profiles, and privacy features.
Users will be able to turn their favorite websites into makeshift apps that they can launch right from the MacOS desktop. Other improvements include easier password sharing, new screensavers, improved autocorrect, dictation, and predictive text thanks to AI technology, sensitivity content warnings, new accessibility features, and the ability to add up to five others to Find My.
As for compatibility, nearly any Mac released in the last few years should be able to support the macOS Sonoma update. This includes MacBook Air models from 2018 and later, MacBook Pro models from 2017 and later, Mac Mini models from 2018 and later, iMac models from 2019 and later, Mac Pro models from 2019 and later, and Mac Studio models from 2022 and later.
