Afternoon Libation Break: Butterfly Cannon Tequila

For today’s Afternoon Libation Break, we’re going in a direction that we’ve not taken you before. We’ve reviewed beers and whisky before, but we’ve never actually reviewed a tequila. And frankly, it was new to my tastebuds as well. While I’ve been known to enjoy a nice smoky mezcal, I’ve never had tequila other than mixed into a margarita. So, let’s talk about what Butterfly Cannon tequila has in store for you.

Right out of the gate, Butterfly Cannon has a rather unique and interesting trick up its sleeve. Poured into a glass, you’ll see a bright blue color that is, shall we say, rather uncommon. When you add something with citrus in it, or tonic water (as I did) it changes color to pink. Not a particular impact on the flavor, but a fun party trick if you’ve got someone watching you mix the drink.

Butterfly Cannon is an agave tequila, infused with prickly pear and clementine. What this means is that, in the glass (before any mixers, of course) you have a very fruit-forward nose to it. Take a quick sip of it while it’s still blue, and you have a very sharp hit on your tongue at first, and then a flavor that I couldn’t quite identify. When mixed with tonic water (so now it’s pink), that flavor is softened down a bit. That helped narrow what I’d call the flavor, but it’s tricky. The best I can do is that it tasted (to me) like the smell of perfume. Then again, if you’re not used to thinking of unique tastes in terms of the smell of something, that’s not helpful, but it’s the best I could do.

As with most food and drink in life, I’m willing to try just about anything at least once. While I won’t say I’d never try another tequila again, I don’t think that Butterfly Cannon is one that would be for me. sure, you could bury it with a ton of mixers, but then you’re losing the uniqueness of the color-changing effect. So, if you’re looking for a fruit-forward tequila, this could be the one for you. You should be able to find Butterfly Cannon near you for $34.99 for a 500ml bottle. butterflycannontequila.com
